Four generations

Four generations recently got together on July 4th for a reunion.
Great grandparents are Lyle and Marylyn Wenzl of Vermillion, KS.
Grandparents Cindy Wenzl Hamel and Allen Hamel of Northwood, NH.
Parents Luke and Brittney Hamel of Amhurst, VA.
Baby Luke Allen Hamel of Amhurst, VA and born in October of 2009.

VERMILLION TIMES 8/31/1900

  • Married: There was a big wedding at Mr. Rooney’s on Wednesday.  His daughter Miss Mamie and Mr. James McCormick were married on that day.  Miss Rooney is one among the finest of young ladies in this part of the country while Mr. McCormick is one of the most prosperous young farmers around Blaine.  May their life be long and happy, is our best wish.
  • Poisoned:  Wednesday morning Mrs. George Johnson and her two sons Rex and Ralph had a very narrow escape.  The took some drinks of buttermilk and in a short time the 5 year old, Rex became very ill.  In a few minutes, the two year old Ralph followed suit and became sick all at once.  Soon they were out of danger.
  • We moved The Times office last Friday into P. H. Hybskmann’s building just south of Kern Bros. store.

Vliets ECHO 8/31/1900

  • Died: Mr. Isaac Arnold died at his home in Vermillion, Friday Aug. 24.
  • Born: at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bullock, a boy, last Friday Aug. 24.
  • George Howard, wife and children left last week for Council Grove, Kans., where they are visiting Mr. Howard’s parents, and other relatives.
  • W. F. Robinson of Vermillion and Peter Carney are among those who have recently renewed their subscription to this paper.
  • Jennie Berlew was in town Monday.  Her many friends were glad to see her on the street again and are glad to know that she has so far recovered from her illness.
  • Linus Bonander went to Concordia Wednesday, for a week’s visit.
  • Miss May Twidwell visited with the Orchard family, Sunday.
  • O. F. Anderson had a barn built back of his store building last week.

Vermillion Area News 8-30-2010

Seven TOPS members weighed in and they all stayed for the meeting Tuesday evening, August 24.  Edna Marshall earned the diet basket.  Martha Thompson read a letter from the coordinator.  Martha had the program on “Fruits”.

Thelma Gaddis, Jim and Lois Jean Harper attended the Beattie Coop supper in the Frankfort City Park Tuesday evening August 24.  There was also a meeting held.

Eight Hotsie Totsie Red Hat ladies hosted the Red Hat Tea in the Community Building in Seneca on Saturday August 21.  There were seventy Red Hat ladies present from Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas and South Carolina.  Norman Loughary and Paul Bergman worked in the kitchen.  The Seneca High School Kays served the food and drinks.  The Tea was a big success.

Richard and Gloria Raub of Centralia visited Mabel White Sunday evening.

It reported that John Worden in doing pretty well after a lung replacement at a St. Louis, Mo. Hospital.  His address is John Worden, 4986 Fyler Ave, St. Louis, Mo. 63139.

Robert Phillip Lee from K-State visited Jim and Janet Cornelison and Tim Lee over the weekend

The Vermillion Public Library will hold it’s monthly meeting on September 9th.  The public is welcome to attend.

The Christian Church services were held at the Community Church on Sunday with a pot-luck dinner following the service.

VERMILLION TIMES 8/24/1900

  • Mr. D. C. Henderson, of Wetmore, accepted a position in D. M. Granger’s store.  Mr. Henderson comes well recommended.
  • Married: Miss Dora Martin and Mr. W. W. Flowers were married Wednesday night at the home of the grooms parents north-east of this city.  May the couple live long and prosper.
  • Married: Miss Elsie Gallant and Arthur Kenworthy were married at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gallant, Wednesday evening.  Rev. B. F. Webb officiated.  The bride is a most highly esteemed young lady and the groom  is a steady young farmer.  Only members of the family and a few close friends were present at the wedding.  Their friends extend congratulations.
  • Duffy & Sons have moved their stock of new harness into their new building and are now ready for business.  Call on them for a new set of harness, saddles, whips, robes, blankets, or in fact anything which is found in an up-to-date harness shop.  Bring in your repair work.

Vliets ECHO 8/24/1900

  • Andy Brophy went to Circleville yesterday to play ball.
  • James Munro, an old and respected citizen of Frankfort, died last Tuesday.
  • A beautiful rain fell Tuesday afternoon, which put new life in every living thing.
  • S. V. Keithline will not move, but remain in the old stand and have access to doctors rooms.
  • We learn that Sam Reust has been offered a salary of $150 per month to pitch for the Cleveland, Ohio ball team.
  • Anthony Grable and family came up from Barrett a week ago Saturday, and spent Sunday with relatives.
  • Henry, Willie, Anna, and Vina Johnson, returned last Friday, from their visit in western Kansas, and Nebraska.  They report having had a good time while away.

Vermillion Area News 8-23-2010

Seven TOPS members weighed in and all stayed for the meeting Monday evening August 16.  Thelma Gaddis earned the diet basket.  Dee Van Dorn had the program on “Chocolate”.

Larry and Lila Gaddis of Topeka visited Thelma Gaddis on Thursday August 19.  Lois Jean Harper joined them all and they had lunch at Valentino’s in Seneca.  Later they visited Norman and Joyce Loughary.

Seven Hotsie Totsie Red Hat ladies and Norman Laughary went to Seneca Community building to decorate and make sandwiches for the Red Hat Tea on Saturday August 21.  The Hotsie Totsie were host for the Tea.

Clint and Lisa White of Sabetha visited Mabel White on Sunday.  They had lunch at the Weaver Hotel in Waterville.

Those having lunch at Timmy Lee’s Sunday were Josh and Cheryl Lee and boys, Ron and Vicki Lee of Topeka, Bobby and John Lee of Gladstone, Missouri, Rhonda and Tony Trimble and boys of Blue Rapids, Mandy and Dave Volburg and family of Westmoreland and Chery Lee sister and family and Janet and Jim Cornelison.

Joann Dannels celebrated her 80th birthday by inviting friends in on Friday afternoon August 20th.   Guest were to bring a picture of themselves when they were young.  Refreshments were served.  Most of Joann’s immediate family is spending time in Vermillion in celebration of this event.

Bill and Audrey Broxterman attended Band Day at the University of Nebraska on Friday evening.  The band had rehearsed all week and then performed for the public.

The Vermillion library board will meet on September 8th.  Many paperbacks have been donated to the library and are now  available for checkout.  The library is open Monday and Tuesday from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. and 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Saturday.  The library also has area newspapers available for the public to read.

There are still some “Hooked on Vermillion” T-shirts available at the Vermillion Library.  These T-shirts would make a great birthday gift for your family members or someone who use to live  in the Vermillion area.  The cost is $15.  You can call 785-382-6294 and leave a message if you would like to make arrangements for one mailed to you.

Vermillion Christian Church services will be held at the former Methodist Church on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.  A pot-luck dinner will follow the service.  The public is always invited to attend the services and dinner.

The murals and main street buildings around Vermillion are getting a face lift.  Those painting the town are Becky Shepherd, Joann Dannels, Marylyn Wenzl, Lois Jean Harper, Miranda Virden, George Daud and Audrey Broxterman.  Many of the town residents are donating paint or money for the other materials to complete the project

  • Primary Election: There will be a primary convention of the Republicans of Vermillion precinct of Noble Township held at W. L. Thomas Lumber Office in the city of Vermillion, Saturday, Aug. 18th from 4 o’clock to 6 o’clock p.m. for the purpose of electing 6 delegates to the County Convention at Marysville, Kansas, Monday Aug. 20, 1900.  E.E. Woodman, Committeeman.
  • School Will Open: The first Monday in September is near at hand.  It is then that Johnnie Bare foot will wash his feet, hunt up his slate, reader and speller, put an apple in his pocket, take his sister by the hand and trek off to the old school house for seven or eight months of study and play.  Miss Prim will get out her white dress, buy a box of starch and face powder, and announce her determination at finding the Italy over the rocky shores.

Vliets ECHO 8/17/1900

  • Born: to Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Johnson, on Wednesday, Aug 8, a daughter.
  • Born:  Chas. Rosval is being congratulated on the arrival of a son at his home, Aug. 11.
  • Jennie Twidwell, six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Twidwell who was kicked and tramped on by a team of mules, was not injured as bad as was thought at first.  She is able to be up and around.  It was a narrow escape from death, and the mules breaking loose and leaving the barn was without doubt what saved her.
  • A great calamity has threatened Frankfort.  A party wants a joint located on the main street of that city and is now building one for that purpose.  Some of the town’s good citizens opposed such actions and an injunction will follow.  The party who wants his saloon on the business street threatens to prosecute all the rest of the jointists.  Thus the merry war is on.
